Easy Hot Dog Chili

Hot Dog Chili, Hot Dog, Chili
Last week the Young Single Adults had an activity at the Institute building.  We had hot dogs, then went caroling, and came back for hot chocolate and donuts.  Since we were having hot dogs, I decided to make some hot dog chili.  I wanted a chili that was quick and easy to make and of course, it had to taste good.  Everyone enjoyed it--I even saw a few just putting the chili on the bun without the hot dog.  So next time you serve hot dogs, make it special by making this chili.

Easy Hot Dog Chili

1 pound ground beef
1/3 cup water
2/3 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon (heaping) sugar
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
dash of Worcestershire sauce

In a large sauce pan put the water and ground beef.  Use a potato or avocado masher to break the meat apart while cooking.  When meat is browned, stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, chili powder, salt, pepper, sugar, onion powder and Worcestershire sauce.  Bring to a boil and cook over medium heat about 20 minutes until chili has thickened.

I doubled the recipe and put it in a small crock pot to keep the chili warm.  Everyone said it was really good chili.  I love keeping my Young Single Adults happy and full :-)

  2. I have been married 20 years and have been looking for a good hot dog chili recipe this whole time. THIS IS IT......FINALLY! I have never cooked hamburger in water. I did not know how this would ever thicken up, but it did. My hubby liked it because it doesn't taste like chili beans and it didn't overpower the hot dog...Just nice and beefy....Thank you! This is now my hot dog chili recipe. :)

    1. I always use water to cook ground beef when I am making tacos. The meat ends up the same consistency as Taco Bell's meat. The water just help to break up the meat into tiny little pieces.

    2. Cooking hamburger meat in water helps break down the fat content too. You're able to drain all that fat plus makes whatever you're cooking less greasy. Healthier too.

  7. This recipe sounds delicious. Can you tell me how many it feeds? I'm looking for something to serve about 50 people.. trying to figure out how many times to multiple this recipe. Thank you!

  8. I would say about 10 - 15 people depending on how much they put on the hot dog. I would probably 4X the recipe. And remember, not everyone likes chili on their hot dog.

    3. I've never had any left over to freeze! 😊. But I don't know why it wouldn't freeze well. Let me know how it does if you freeze it.

  12. Please skip the sugar altogether.

  13. You can replace the sugar with Stevia if you'd like.

  14. Has anyone substituted ground chuck for the ground beef? Since it produces less grease, would I need to change the amount of water used or make any other changes? I'm just not a fan of ground beef so I never use it. Thanks

    1. You can use ground turkey if you'd like. It really doesn't matter what meat you use. I always use the extra lean ground beef. It's your preference. Hope you enjoy it!

  15. Has anyone substituted ground chuck in place of the ground beef? Since it produces less grease, will I need to increase the amount of water used or make any other adjustments to the recipe? Thanks

  16. Ground chuck is fine. I usually use a low fat ground beef--90/10. You could probably even substitute ground turkey if you're not a beef eater. I don't feel you need to add more water. Let me know how it works for you.

  18. This sounds just like my husbands chili recipe, except he adds sausage to the hamburger meat (sometimes when we get fresh sausage, we use hot) and puts some mustard in as well...he will make a big batch and then we divide it in vacuum seal bags and freeze. Thanks for posting!

  20. This is very similar to the recipe I make but I add chopped onion while cooking the hamburger, about 3/4 cup

  21. This is how I cook mine. I also add garlic powder or a clove depending on what I have on hand. I drain my meat even though I usually use the 90% lean hamburger. Sometimes I just use tomato paste instead of tomato sauce. I always cook two pounds. Everyone loves it. Ran out on July 4th.

  23. I love making chili-southwest style. So, when I was tasked to make hot dog chili, I had no idea where to start. I looked through recipes until I found this one. Simple-no fuss, just my kind of recipe. It turned out great. The only change that I made was the chili powder, I realized that I didn't have any so I subbed out chili seasoning for it. The same amount. This chili went great with the dogs, received well by all who ate it. :)
